CHARACTER INTERPRETATION
» Appearance: One, two, three.
» Suitability: n/a
» Orientation: Straight, shows romantic and sexual interest in various women (Jessica, Madison, Ruby, for example.)
» Personality: In his own words, Sam is a "mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a taco." Decently true, as he keeps so many things about himself to himself, not even sharing all of his thoughts with his brother. In this way, Sam Winchester is built on an initial foundation of introversion, angst, thoughtfulness, determination, and morality. Though the extent of each characteristics bends as the series progresses, due to the various events he faces and lives through (or doesn't live through.) There is a definite resolution imbued in the younger Winchester that remains despite the horrors that he experiences, and that drive pushes him to move from thinking and following to acting and questioning. Though Sam rebelled against his father's wishes early on, he does go on to follow Dean's orders for a long time when they begin hunting together. However, he later moves to develop a stubborn doggedness and starts making decisions for himself. This determination makes him appear strong-willed, which he certainly is, though it also causes he and Dean to butt heads on more than one occasion, and creates both tension and anger between the two.

Still, despite the personality shifts he makes progressively after he's brought back from the dead the first time, he's still Sam. He buries himself in books and research often, working fervently on cases, and without much complaint. In most cases, he comes off as more rational and level-headed than Dean, brooding more over situations rather than jumping headlong into danger. Of course, having looked up to Dean all his life, Sam has obviously adopted some of his older brother's mannerisms, and does make reckless and questionable decisions on more than one occasion. Typically, he opts to be well-prepared and sufficiently informed before going after a monster, and though his moral compass becomes increasingly confused while he hunts for Lilith in the fourth season, Sam has been known to place a high value on human life. He asks questions before shooting, most often with a desire to come out the other side with as many people saved, rescued, and alive as possible. In this way, he works doggedly to protect.

Speaking of protecting, working to fight for loved ones even to the point of self-sacrifice is a big part of his life (and is really "the Winchester way.") Dean is the biggest influence in Sam's life, and the most important person to him. He would do anything for his older brother, whether it be taking a bullet, lying to keep unsavory truths in the dark, or trying to make a deal with a demon to bring Dean back from Hell. In the same way, Sam was compelled to action and to start hunting again so that he could avenge both their mother, and his girlfriend, Jessica. He's plagued by nightmares of the latter's death for a long time, and is still stricken with the guilt of not having been able to save her. The same applies to Madison, a werewolf that he has feelings for in one episode, and though he did kill her for everyone's benefit, his grief was immense, and evident.

Underneath the angst and forehead creases, though, Sammy has more than one characteristics of a typical young man. He and Dean bicker like all siblings, he falls for girls, he struggles with his inner demons. Of course, he isn't a normal guy, and he's long since given up that concept. Even when he was younger, Sam fought with his father over his right to a "typical" life, and broke away from the Winchester trifecta with every intention on building the life that he wanted to achieve. His inborn stubbornness which first drives him away from hunting eventually brings him back to it, and with a passion. Whether it's finding and killing "yellow-eyes," or doing the same for Lilith, or working to stop the Apocalypse, Sam is hard to shake once he latches on to an idea. When he begins developing his powers and drinking demon blood, even Dean's concern, discussions, and anger can't shake him, as unfortunate as it is. Though deep down he is aware of the consequences of the dangers he's been flirting with, it seems next to impossible for him to stop moving down the path he's chosen. It isn't just an addiction that leads him down this road, however; there's a drive for individuality and independence that pushes him on. He wants to protect Dean, if only from the truth of what he's been up to, and works in any way possible during this time to handle everything alone. Whether it be developing his powers despite the repercussions, or collaborating with Ruby despite Dean's dislike of the demon, Sam makes choices based on how best to keep his brother from harm as a result of his reality. And, as they attempt to stop the end of the world from taking place, he'd like to apply the same principal, somehow putting himself in the line of fire to keep the world at peace.

» Re-App Changes: A lot changed for Sam while on the island. At first, he, like Dean, was restless and on edge. Being stuck under the thumb of a sex-crazed goddess will do that to a hunter with the drive to find and kill her. The natural instinct to hunt down the pagan goddess was nothing compared to the drive to beat down old enemies who appeared, like Lucifer, Michael, Ruby, and others. Sam had to adjust not only to living in an uneasy harmony with a wide variety of people, but also to the complete lack of order or privacy that came with the bizarre events. However, over time, he began to warm up to island living, and not exactly for the free-wheeling sex that came with it. Atia was a new beginning for a man doomed to Hell, and Sam, after angsting copiously over his eventual descent, realized that time spent worrying was time wasted. With his family and friends' help, he was able to get back on his feet, live the apple-pie life that is stolen from all hunters. Living with his brother, parents, and their new, close friends provided an opportunity he never believed possible, and made him infinitely more hopeful and grateful for the chance.

The biggest change came with his relationship with Saphira, and the eventual marriage and expectancy of their first child. Though their relationship was strange at first, Sam quickly grew to love the former dragon, despite all instincts driving him in the other direction. His begrudging brother blessed the union, which came as a relief to Sam, but John and Mary (John, especially) were less thrilled about the "monster" addition to the family. Believing Sam to have been keeping secrets, the Winchester parents were both disappointed and frustrated to hear too late about the Saphira-related changes in their son's life. The biggest drama emerged when Sam and Saphira revealed that they would be having a child, and it seemed that his relationship with his parents was at an all-time low. Torn, and fearing that his demon blood would be passed on to the baby, Sam disappeared from the island amidst chaos and fighting.

SAMPLES

» First Person Sample Choice (3): [ 'Tis the season, right? Slightly out of breath and with mild wind burn on his cheeks, Sam smiles gently and addresses the potential audience. ]

I've never really been big on Christmas. Few years back, I was accused of being a Grinch, but, uh-- Anyway, I think there's something to be said here. Back home, I didn't really celebrate. Didn't really get to. I mean, we had some cheap egg nog and a plastic tree in a motel room every so often, but that was about it. I only know a handful of Christmas carols, and I've never been good with presents. I mean, it's tough, right? Finding something annually to really wish a person a good new year. Something that can make them happy.

... Things were different back there. For a lot of us, here, I know. I just-- That I'm spending this year with my family, with some kind of normal life? Even with the stuff that happens on the island, it's...

[ He scoffs, lightly. ]

... Really kind of a miracle. That's what the holidays are, I guess.

[ Sam pauses, licking his lips. ]

I'm not sure what my point is, so-- Sorry about that. I think, just... things've changed, for me. For all of us, maybe. And I'm glad. So, Merry Christmas, everyone.

» Third Person Sample Choice (3): Sometimes, he thought back to the first time he felt his collar tighten. Way back, years ago, when he'd first arrived to the island, he'd gotten a quick rundown of the rules. Naturally so, since he'd apparently been under Atia's influence before, since people had recognized him and welcomed him back. The bemused and wary Sam hadn't had an easy time "readjusting" to life in sex paradise, not for a while. If you took into account the enemies of the Winchesters that seemed to appear en masse, the seemingly pacified residents around him, the pagan goddess; it was a no brainer. He--they--would have to do something, to stop whatever this was from happening and to return home. No matter how dramatic or dangerous things were back where they'd come from, it was their responsibility as hunters to face the situation at hand and to get moving soon after.

Except, that wasn't how things had happened. The collar was the first experience Sam really had with the dangers of defying Atia. When it had first begun to tighten, he'd ignored the obvious solution and had done what he typically did best: research. Hours of reading and talking to natives and drop-ins alike. As the two weeks plowed ahead, as his breathing became more and more restricted, the feverishly-uncomfortable Winchester had a very tiny voice in the back of his head remind him that there was an answer. And like a true Winchester, he'd stubbornly ignored it, almost up until the end. Soon before the point of death, in a moment of desperation and mild panic, he'd been directed to Mao... and, well, that had been that. A hook up, the sweep of release, and a deep shame that had come with him having to resort to Atia's methods to problem solving. No. He wouldn't let it happen again.

Funny, he thought, though it's only half funny. He'd found more on the island than he'd ever dreamed, had rarely been to Mao since to loosen his collar. As bizarre and unnatural a place as the island was, there was always the fact that he'd been gifted with his family, friends, a wife. A life he'd never thought possible. It was so beyond strange that he sometimes had to think back to those early days, those reckless, dangerous first weeks on Atia, and remembered the fresh taste of home. Now, it was hard to think back to the world of monsters and solitude that he and Dean had lived in for so long. They'd both gotten a lot of unexpected joys here; sometimes it was hard to accept that they weren't locked into a Djinn-induced fever dream. Still. Running a hand along the lining of his collar, present since day one, Sam scoffed lightly. Maybe it was still a forever-countdown until strangulation, and maybe there were some seriously obscene events every so often. But, usually, it was a blessing. And he'd never felt so dirty admitting to a blessing before in his life.
